Social Media Marketing Strategy
We’ve looked at the why’s and how’s of social media marketing. We know why we need a social media marketing presence, and we know how some of the bigger social media platforms work. But here’s the big question: How do I plan my social media marketing strategy?
Identify your Business Goals
Without a clear definition of your company’s goals, you cannot hope to strategize your social media marketing campaign.
Although each company will have specific goals they want to achieve, there are several universal goals you’ll want to aim for: increasing brand awareness, retaining customers and reducing marketing costs. This can act as a good starting point in planning your social media marketing strategy.
Set your Social Media Marketing Objectives
You’ve identified your goals, but how will you know when you’ve achieved them? You need to have parameters that spell out minimum and maximum targets to achieve in order to measure your level of success.
Be realistic. A 1000% increase in sales is not a realistic target and will be a dismal failure. Be specific. A blurry image of some distant future will not help you achieve your goals either. Most importantly, set deadlines. Without this, you’ll never know how far your social media marketing strategy has come.
Identify your Customer
When you know your target market’s age, occupation, income, interests, habits, likes, dislikes, motivations and objections, then it’s easier and cheaper to target them on social media.
And if you know your target market, you will be successful in reaching them on social media, your social media presence will grow, and you’ll see higher conversion rates.
Research you Competition
What are they doing that you haven’t thought of? What’s the next big thing going to be that you don’t want to be left out of?
It is vital you understand not only your customer, but your market as well. Twitter is especially useful for keeping your eye on the competition. Follow your opposition and see what they are tweeting. Look at their last 20 posts on Facebook. This will keep you in the loop and give you an inordinate amount of confidence when planning your own social media marketing strategy.
Choose your Social Media Marketing Channels
We’ve already touched on this in other pages, but it’s worth repeating. Do not spread yourself too thinly! If you present yourself on every social media platform available, you’ll miss your target market, and waste a lot of valuable time in the process.
Almost everybody these days has a Facebook page and a Twitter page. Use these as your starting point. Speak to your existing social media followers and ask them where else they go for their social media fix.
Because they already follow you on Facebook and Twitter, you want to be where they are, because that’s where you’ll find their friends!
Create great Social Media Content
So you have 3’000 new followers? Great! Want to turn that into 300? No problem. Post rubbish. That will ensure you get rid of them.
A great social media marketing strategy is useless if you can’t keep your followers entertained. We all hate spam in any form, and if you’ve liked a page on Facebook and they keep bombing you with useless information, you’ll delete them and move on.
Keep it fresh and entertaining. Here’s a tip that everybody in marketing seems to forget: Humour almost always works. Make them laugh and you’re golden.
